It would be wrong to assume that all people are net savvy. Yes most of the people do know how to search for information using the Internet, but then expecting them to know all about social networking may be a little too much. Those who are not very familiar with chatting and online communication cannot be expected to know the meaning of social networking in the context of Internet.

In plain language we can explain a social networking site to be a place where people converge together with a common interest. This meeting happens online on the Internet similar to meeting people in real life too.

Social networking sites that cater to professional communities are also a big hit. Take the example of Linkedin, the site that caters to professional community, was started in 2003. As on date more than 50 million professionals from across the world have joined the networking site.

With over 150 million users and half of them online every day, you can make friends with over 75 million people from across 170 countries speaking 35 languages through facebook. The members do not belong to any one age group but people of all ages are members here.

Twitter is fast becoming famous as the social networking site frequented by the tech savvy urban males and females. The subscribers seem to the in tune with latest technology as well as what is happening across the globe in current affairs. It boasts of a monthly growing subscription base of over 4.1 million users most of whom are urban professionals and tech savvy.
